RETOOL Event: The Past and Present of Climate Activism: Contestation, Democracy, and Change, 11–12 June 2026, Trento University
On June 11–12, 2026, the School of International Studies at the University of Trento hosted the international workshop ''The Past and Present of Climate Activism: Contestation, Democracy, and Change''. The main theme of the conference explored the connection between climate activism and democracy.
Throughout the event, participants discussed how citizens, grassroots organizations and social movements can strengthen democratic decision-making in the face of ongoing climate change. These discussions highlighted the roles that public participation, climate litigation, emotional engagement and collective action play in shaping more inclusive climate governance.
The workshop examined both historical and contemporary forms of environmental activism. Presenters addressed a diverse range of topics, including Greenpeace’s transformation during the 1970s, anti-nuclear resistance movements in Germany, ecofeminism in Italy and the relationship between climate justice campaigns and democratic participation. In addition to historical contexts, the event focused heavily on emerging challenges. These included the criminalization of activism, the impacts of militarization and colonial legacies on environmental politics and the vital contributions of indigenous and youth-led movements. By bringing together historical perspectives and current experiences, the workshop encouraged a deeper understanding of how activism can drive social and political change.
Overall, the conference demonstrated that climate activism remains an important force in addressing environmental crises. By learning from past struggles and present innovations, researchers and activists can help build stronger democratic responses to climate change and support more sustainable and equitable futures.
