Concept
The RETOOL project aims to advance our understanding of how to address the twin challenges of responding to the climate imperative while strengthening and reinvigorating democratic governance.
The urgency of this project is undeniable, given the imperative nature of addressing the climate emergency. Decision-makers worldwide face significant challenges in swiftly and fairly responding to this crisis. Existing systems of governance, including those in Europe, have proven inadequate in delivering timely and comprehensive policy responses. Moreover, they have struggled to effectively involve citizens in decision-making, contributing to a lack of trust in both processes and outcomes. Simultaneously, democratic institutions, processes, and norms are under growing pressure, marking a prolonged period of democratic decline.
The foundation of the project rests on the belief that achieving successful and inclusive climate transitions, as outlined in the European Green Deal and the Paris Agreement, necessitates robust democratic governance. This includes the active engagement of citizens in shaping the transition process.
The project started in February 2024 and will run until January 2027.
